Home-used or foreign-used: which is better value?
Foreign-used means imported and registered here for the first time. Home-used means already driven on Ghanaian roads, often for years. Neither is automatically better; they're different bets. Here's how to tell which one suits you.

Customers ask me this more than anything else. My answer is always the same: it depends on the car, and on you. A home-used car with one careful owner and a folder of receipts can be a better buy than a foreign-used car with a clean-looking history report. But on average, the two carry different risks, and it helps to know which ones you're taking on.
Side by side
| Question | Foreign-used | Home-used |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Higher for the same model and year; you're paying for shipping, duty and fresher condition. | Usually lower for the same model and year; the market prices in Ghanaian wear. |
| History you can check | Usually good: a Carfax or AutoCheck report shows owners, mileage readings, accidents and title brands. | Depends on the owner's receipts. DVLA records owners, not services or accidents. |
| Mileage honesty | Odometer readings are logged at sales and inspections, so rollbacks show up. | No central record. A wound-back odometer is hard to prove. |
| Duty | Paid on arrival. From a dealer it should be in the price; ask for the documents. | Paid years ago. The Ghanaian registration is your evidence. |
| Wear from Ghanaian roads | None yet. Suspension, bushes and underside are as the last country left them. | Potholes, heat, dust and variable fuel take a toll; check suspension and A/C hard. |
| Parts & servicing | US-spec versions can differ from the Ghana-sold model: engines, electronics, lights. Rare trims can wait on parts. | If it was sold new in Ghana it's local spec, with straightforward parts and dealer support. |
| Registration | New registration and fresh plates in your name: 7–10 working days. | Change of ownership only. Faster, but insist it's done before you pay the balance. |
Neither column wins outright, which is the point. Foreign-used is a bet on information: you can see a lot of the car's past. Home-used is a bet on the owner: the right one makes it a great buy, the wrong one makes it a lottery ticket.
When home-used makes sense
- Your budget is tight. The biggest discounts are on smaller, older home-used cars (a Vitz or a Corolla), and they're cheap to run and fix.
- It's a one-owner car with receipts. A car serviced at the franchise dealer, with a folder of receipts, can have a better paper trail than an import.
- You want Ghana spec. Diesel Hilux, Land Cruiser and Prado sold new by the local franchise come in local specification, suited to our roads and fuel. Fleet-maintained examples are some of the best used buys in the country.
- It's older than ten years. Since Act 1014, a car over ten years old can't be imported, so home-used is the only legal route to one.
When foreign-used makes sense
- You want to know the history. The more you're spending, the more a history report is worth, especially for accidents and mileage.
- You want lower mileage and newer safety tech. US imports tend to be newer, with lane-keeping, adaptive cruise and reversing cameras that locally sold versions of the same year may lack.
- You want a model that wasn't sold new here. Most Highlanders, RX 350s and Sportages on Ghanaian roads arrived foreign-used.
The best home-used cars are better than the average foreign-used one. The trick is telling which is which.
Red flags on each side
Foreign-used
A history report the seller "can't get". Title brands: salvage, rebuilt, flood. A VIN that doesn't match the customs papers. "Duty paid" with no documents to show for it.
Home-used
No receipts at all. A registration certificate in a name the seller can't explain. A plate year that doesn't match the story: "one owner since new" on a 2012 car whose plates say it was first registered in 2021. Fresh black paint underneath.
Whichever you choose, the 20-minute check applies to both.
